Which shared custody schedule should you choose?

Alternating weeks (7/7): the most common. The child switches homes once a week, often on Friday after school or on Monday morning. Ideal from around age 6.

2-2-3: two days with one parent, two days with the other, then three days (the weekend) in turn. The child never goes more than three days without seeing each parent: often recommended for toddlers.

2-2-5-5: each parent always has the same weekdays (for example Monday-Tuesday for one, Wednesday-Thursday for the other) and weekends alternate. Handy for regular activities.

Every other weekend: the child lives mainly with one parent, and the other parent has them every other weekend (Friday to Sunday).

What about school holidays?

Most often, each holiday period is split into two halves, and parents alternate which half they take. For the summer, some prefer to alternate fortnights. The calendar above does this automatically for France (zones A, B, C) and for both French- and Dutch-speaking Belgium.

This calendar is an organisational aid: if there is a court ruling or a parenting agreement, that is what counts. Also check the holiday dates with your school.

Frequently asked questions

How are school holidays shared in joint custody?

Usually each holiday period is divided into two equal halves. One parent takes the first half, the other the second, and they swap at the next period or the next year.

What is the best shared custody schedule for a baby?

For toddlers, short rotations such as 2-2-3 are often recommended, because the child doesn’t go long without seeing each parent.

Can I put the calendar in my diary?

Yes: the “Calendar” button creates an .ics file for each parent, to import into Google Calendar, Outlook or the iPhone calendar.

Is my information saved?

No. Everything stays in your browser; nothing is sent over the internet.
